Have you noticed longer than usual delays crossing into the US and back into canada from one of the Buffalo/Niagara Bridges. Did you think that using the NEXUS Lanes would consistently speed up your crossing time. Well you’re not alone and the Buffalo Niagara Partnership is working on our behalf to minimize bridge wait times.
Here is a link to the Buffalo Niagara Partnership’s website and a letter that the Partnership President and CEO wrote to both US and Canadian border officials. http://www.thepartnership.org/news/article/current/2014/09/08/100473/concern-over-cross-border-travel.
Also it works both ways! In 2012 ” increased security did cut in half the amount of cross-border shopping by Americans in Canada, according to the StatsCan study”. This following a 2010 report that “United States residents made 7.4 million same-day car trips to Canada in 2010, down 5.1% from 2009 and the lowest number since record keeping started in 1972. Same-day car travel from the United States to Canada has declined every year since 1999 when travel peaked at 27.3 million”.
Travel Industry Reports
Canadians made 65.2 million trips outside of the country in 2012, an increase of 5.3% over 2011. 85% of these trips were made to the U.S.
Travelers from the U.S. accounted for 42% of Canada’s international travel receipts in 2011, compared to 61% in 2003.
