Back To School – Good for Economy

If you read last weeks headlines he is what you saw…

Toronto Star: “Low loonie to boost back-to-school spending at home

Financial Post: Lower loonie to boost back-to-school spending — and Canadian retailers’ bottom lines

Canadian Press: Low loonie expected to fuel increase in back-to-school spending

And on, and on… Do you know why the spending will be up? It’s because all of the Back-To-School supplies that are imported from the US or off shore and the retailers are increasing the prices to account for our weak dollar. I took a look at some of the required items for the back-to-schoolers…

Staples – Made by ACCO USA in Illinois

Copier/Computer Paper – Made in the USA

Bic Pens – Made in USA

Sharpie Markers – Made in India

Crayola Crayons – Made in China

All these items are purchased in US Dollars by the retailers, marked up accordingly to allow for currency conversion and more
