In this post I’m taking a look at the new Rogers ROAM LIKE HOMETM promotion to see if it’s a good deal for Snowbirds.
First off, according to the Rogers website, you will need to be on a Rogers “Share Everything” Plan before you can take advantage of the promotion. For continuity we will assume that you have existing Rogers phones so you will just be renewing your Rogers services. To be on a Share Everything Plan one person MUST have a Smartphone, this line will cost you $40.00/month line fee. The second person can have a “basic” phone at a $35.00/month line fee. The minimum data plan for the Smartphone user is 250mb at $10.00/month. Now with both phones you get unlimited Canada wide calling and unlimited text, video and picture in Canada. You also get Call Display, Voicemail and 2500 Call Forwarding minutes. Total Cost $85.00/month plus taxes.
Small Print: Your first invoice will include a Connection Fee of $15 per line to activate your service on our network. You may be subject to a Device Savings Recovery Fee (DSRF), a Price Plan Downgrade Fee. International long distance, text to landline and roaming charges extra. Additional Call Forwarding minutes $0.10/minute.
Now we want to take a look at the new ROAM LIKE HOMETM package for U.S. Travellers.
ROAM LIKE HOMETM daily fee is a Pay-Per-Use rate and subject to change without notice. The published rate is $5.00 Fee is charged per and applies for 24 hours from first use while in the U.S. (as per rogers.com). $5.00 plus taxes charged when first call, text message or byte of data sent or received while in U.S. Any additional usage after the 24 hours triggers another $5.00 charge. Maximum charge in a month is 10 days or $50.00.
Let’s compare this to my favorite Pay as you Go U.S. phone from Tracfone.
Again I’ll assume that you have a Tracfone already, If not they can be purchased at Walmart or other retailer starting at $9.95. for a basic phone and $29.95 for a Smartphone. Tracfone provides a 1-800 link number for calls to Canada. 1 minute Canada call = 1 minute U.S. call. Texting rates vary by phone from .3 minutes to .5 minutes per text. Can only text to U.S. numbers. Voicemail is included on all phones
A 200 minutes, 90 day service card with rollover = $39.99 (2 cards per phone) = $159.96
A 800 minutes, 365 day service card with rollover = $119.99 (1 card per phone) = $239.98 (Bonus – all future minutes purchased are doubled automatically)
2GB Data Plan, no expiry as long as phone activated = $50.00
Two Snowbirds – Out of country for 6 months.
6 months of Share Everything Plan = $510.00
6 months of ROAM LIKE HOMETM = $600.00
250MB/mth Data Included.
Total = $1,110.00
6 months, 800 minutes total = $159.00
1 year Service, 1,600 minutes total = $238.00
2GB of Data (500mb more than Rogers), no expiration = $50.00
Total = $209.96
Total = $289.98 (1 yr Service Plan)
Conclusion – If you can live without texting back to Canada and limit yourself to 800 minutes on the cell phone then the Tracfone solution will save you $901.00 during your 6 months out of the country. If you’re an annual Snowbird opt for the Tracfone one year plans and you will save $1,882.00 over the two years. Not enough minutes? You can always buy top-up cards as you need them.
