PayPal Gets On Board – Kind Of!

I received an email from PayPal today telling me that “For a limited time, we’re making cross-border shopping a whole lot better. You can skip the duty* when you enter the promo code DUTYFREE and checkout with PayPal at select big name U.S. retailers from March 26 to April 3, 2013.” intriguing so I thought I would give it a try. https://www.paypal-marketing.ca/dutyfree/

Among the Retailers featured in the program was Macy’s so here we go…

Without much thinking I selected a pair of shoes on  www.macys.com the Macy’s US online site. As you can see the shoes selected are $98.00 if shipped within the US. Total deliverd price after checkout ($9.95 Shipping, $5.88 Tax) $113.83

I now select International Shipping – Canada, and GUESS WHAT? The cost of the shoes immediately jumps to $107.80. Just to make sure that this was not a “currency” conversion I deliberately elect to pay with US Dollars. this is a standard practice at many retailers.

Finally I enter the “DUTYFREE” code supplied by PayPal and get the following.

The moral my fellow Canadians – if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.
