So I needed a spare key for the 2004 Dodge Caravan in Phoenix. First I called the Dealer, they wanted $100.00 for the key and $40.00 to program it. Decided to check out Pep Boys and O’Reilly Auto parts (like Parts Source). The both directed me to Ace Hardware. Dropped into the closest Ace and advised that they had the “chip” key I needed. Within 10 minutes I had a new chip key, fully programmed by the store attendant – $79.00 out the door.
Now figuring this was pretty good I went into Canadian research mode. First to the local Dealer, McGiver Dodge in Newmarket. Informed by the Parts manager that it would be $200.00 for the key and $60.00 to program it. A call to CarLocksmith in Aurora resulted in a quote on $55.00 for a service call (they don’t have a retail store), $120.00 for the key and $60.00 to program it so $230.00 all in. Canadian Tire didn’t have key I needed and Parts Source sent me back to Dealer.
So all in Ace was $150.00 cheaper than any option in Canada. So next time your in Buffalo or elsewhere with your car stop in at Ace and pick up a spare.
